Collins Aerospace Ships Electric Generators for Army Abrams Tanks

Collins Aerospace has delivered over 250 electric generators that the U.S. Army will use to power M1A2 Abrams battle tanks.

Collins said Monday it shipped the generators under a subcontract awarded in 2013 by General Dynamics. The contract provides for a total of over 400 generator units through 2021.

These deliveries support the Army’s System Enhanced Package Version 3 that aims to extend the tank’s lifespan and boost operational performance. Tank operators will use the generator to electrically power onboard systems including radio jammers and laser warning receivers.

The new generator is designed to provide 50 percent more power than Abrams’ older power system. Collins also included active load management and magnetics features that allow the generator to function at full power over the course of a full operation, even when idle.

“Collins Aerospace looks forward to continuing to work with the Army to support its electric power needs,” said Kevin Raftery, vice president and general manager of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance and space solutions at Collins Aerospace.
