Axon has launched an artificial intelligence-driven scanner designed with ethics-focused technology standards.

The company said Wednesday its Automated License Plate Recognition technology follows guidelines made by the firm’s AI and Policing Technology Ethics Board.

The ALPR technology will allow the Axon Fleet 3 in-car video system to scan license plates with respect to security ethics.

Axon’s ethics board will collaborate with public safety experts to create a framework that will guide law enforcement agencies in implementing the ALPR technology.

“ALPR is an important tool for keeping communities safe as it can help apprehend criminals, find missing children, and recover stolen vehicles,” said Rick Smith, CEO at Axon.

“We do, however, recognize that there are legitimate concerns about privacy protections, constitutionality of search and data security issues that need to be addressed,” he added.
