A Unisys-sponsored survey has found that 77 percent of U.S. citizens said they accept the fact that local and state government agencies practise interagency sharing of their social security numbers, income data, criminal records and other personal information.

Unisys said Thursday YouGov polled nearly 2K citizens in eight states and found that many respondents said they are concerned of how agencies ensure data protection and privacy.

Some of the common concerns raised by the respondents are privacy infringement, lack of clarity with regard to the use of their personal data by the government, external cyber attacks, unauthorized data access and lack of protection from data breaches.

Shawn Kingsberry, vice president and director government solutions at Unisys, said survey results suggest that agencies need to ramp up their efforts to provide citizens confidence about the security of their data and privacy.

“Agencies can address these concerns through data protection solutions that leverage technologies such as microsegmentation, encryption and dynamic isolation to limit the access to this data by those who are unauthorized to see it,” Kingsberry added.

The survey also showed that 88 percent of citizens said they intend to engage with agencies using a mobile phone, tablet or a computer and 77 percent said they prefer to use the online option when they want to search for information about government infrastructure or services.

Sixty percent of respondents said they prefer using a mobile optimized website to serve as a single point of access to several agencies.
