SwRI, Industry Partners to Help DoD Develop Processing System for Satellite Data

The Department of Defense has selected Southwest Research Institute and partners to develop a prototype system for the processing of satellite-based military data.

SwRI said Tuesday it has teamed up with Amazon Web Services and SciTec to prototype the system under the Commercially Augmented Space Inter-Network Operations Processing, Exploitation, and Dissemination, or CASINO PED, program. The effort supports the U.S. Air Force's Space and Missile Systems Center.

CASINO PED aims to boost the timeliness of battlefield information and intelligence, and address limits in data processing.

The Defense Innovation Unit will manage the system’s demonstration and provide timely support as needed.

“Through this demonstration project, we will integrate a ground network supporting a constellation of satellites with unique processing capabilities and cloud access to deliver data needed to meet military objectives,” said Debi Rose, SwRI senior program manager for CASINO PED.

CASINO PED will work to demonstrate timely delivery of processed satellite data to tactical units in need, Rose noted.

The effort aims to produce the prototype within the next 14 months.
