Sen. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, took a tour at Huntington Ingalls Industries’ Newport News Shipbuilding division to view work on nuclear-powered vessels.

Hirono, a member of the Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on Seapower, took a look at HII’s efforts to construct, overhaul and maintain nuclear-powered submarines and aircraft carriers, the company said Friday.

She also observed digital integration activities and facility investments across the site in Newport News as well as facilities that support construction work for Virginia- and Columbia-class submarines and a Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carrier.

“As the ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on Seapower, I respect and appreciate the critical role American shipbuilders such as Newport News Shipbuilding play in protecting American national security and advancing our strategic interests around the world,” Hirono said.

The Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on Seapower works to supervise the U.S. Navy’s shipbuilding efforts.
