The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency has chosen five projects as the winning entries of the second phase of the MagQuest competition, which aims to discover new ways of collecting geomagnetic data to update the World Magnetic Model.

According to an NGA press release published Friday, the winners will each receive $200K to further their concepts, which involve the use of cube satellites, magnetometers, autonomous technologies and more to obtain data from the Earth’s magnetic field.

The agency announced its selection of teams for the competition’s first phase in June and received 17 submissions for the second phase. This second competition stage was open to Phase 1 winners as well as new teams for a total of $1M in prizes.

“We look forward to seeing how these teams advance their innovations in potential future phases as well as beyond the challenge,” said Richard Salman, director of the NGA’s Office of Geomatics.

The NGA may opt to launch phase three for development and testing activities, as well as a fourth phase focused on deploying geomagnetic data collection technologies for a year
