The Missile Defense Agency has drafted a request for proposals on interceptors that will work to deter North Korean missiles, Breaking Defense reported Friday. MDA seeks to initiate the Next Generation Interceptor program that will succeed the Pentagon’s canceled Redesigned Kill Vehicle program.
The original Boeing-led RKV program aimed to produce new ground-based interceptors intended as replacements for the Exo-Atmospheric Kill Vehicle. DoD canceled the old program due to feasibility issues. DoD distributed the new program’s RFP draft to industry representatives during an Aug. 29 event two weeks following RKV’s termination.
“There are no paybacks due and we learned quite a lot that we’ll carry forward into the next-generation interceptor,†said Mike Griffin, research and engineering chief at the Pentagon, who decided on RKV’s cancellation.
