The Missile Defense Agency has conducted a demonstration of a Lockheed Martin-built missile defense system designed to intercept medium-range weapons. According to a company press release published Friday, the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense platform traced and intercepted a ballistic missile through the use of a remotely controlled launcher unit.

THAAD works to deter ballistic missile threats and handle mass raid scenarios via hit-to-kill technology. The platform can also be fielded alongside sensors and other ballistic missile defense system components.

“This successful test paves the way for delivery of an urgent need capability that will enhance THAAD’s emplacement options resulting in greater asset protection,” said Richard McDaniel, vice president of Lockheed’s upper tier integrated air and missile defense systems segment.
