Lockheed Martin has selected Qorvo to provide gallium nitride power amplifiers for a U.S. Army-employed phased array radar.
Qorvo said Tuesday its GaN high power amplifiers work to boost the power density, reliability and efficiency of the AN/TPQ-53 or Q-53 radar system.
The GaN HPA is designed to provide double the amount of saturated output compared to that of gallium arsenide technology.
In addition, the new compact-sized amplifier supports the Q-53 radar's long-range counterfire acquisition and other functions. Gallium nitride on silicon carbide or GaN-on-SiC technology allows the amplifier to reduce costs associated with life cycle management.
The Army uses the Q-53 radar to detect and track enemy fires within a coverage of up to 360 degrees.
