David Egts, chief technologist at Red Hat’s North American public sector business, has said that organizations need to undergo a cultural shift and move away from traditional approaches to achieve digital transformation.

He said in a Red Hat piece published Tuesday in Federal News Network that while organizations implement new approaches like DevOps, they tend to hold on to methods like waterfall testing which slows down the pace of software delivery.

Waterfall testing involves breaking down the development process into phases which rely on prior results before another phase can begin. In addition, Egts said retraining staff for newer technologies and implementing automation can encourage applicants for government positions and free up employees’ time for value-added tasks.

“Digital transformation is more than technology,” he said. “It’s people, processes, and technology.”

Red Hat has worked with Lockheed Martin to accelerate the development of software for the F-22 Raptor fighter jet using Agile and DevSecOps methodologies.
