TYSONS CORNER, VA, August 22, 2019 — Todd Probert, vice president at Raytheon’s (NYSE: RTN) intelligence, information and services division, believes the military first needs to employ data scientists and build its data management capabilities to utilize artificial intelligence effectively in processing classified information, GovCon Wire reported Monday.
According to a C4ISRNet article published Friday, it is necessary for military leaders to be able to organize and understand their data before they can make use of AI to make predictions and formulate plans for mission purposes.
“There’s so much data available to the military, but it’s stored all over the place, and rarely in a format that is easily transferrable into an algorithm,” said Probert, who added that the limited number of people with the required skills will be sought by both the government and the private sector.
Ainikki Riikonen, a research assistant at the Center for a New American Security’s technology and national security program, said in the report the Department of Defense’s intended fiscal year 2020 budget includes $927M for AI and machine learning projects.
