IBM has donated a computer cluster valued at $11.6M to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to help further the university’s artificial intelligence research work, MIT News reported Monday.

The Satori computer cluster is based on the IBM-built Summit supercomputer at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee and will be installed at the Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center in Holyoke, Mass.

It is fitted with IBM Power9 processors and 256 graphics processing units to rapidly handle video game images and process two quadrillion calculations per second to support the development of next-generation AI applications.

“We’re excited to see a range of AI projects at MIT get a computing boost, and we can’t wait to see what magic awaits,” said John Kelly, an executive vice president at IBM, in February when the donation was first announced.

Satori will go live this fall and is expected to support AI-driven projects, such as an upcoming research effort to prolong lithium-ion battery life.
