Lockheed Martin has received a contract of undisclosed value to manufacture and deliver lot 3 of a phased array radar system to the U.S. Army. The company said Monday it will utilize gallium nitride transmit-receive modules to produce 15 AN/TPQ-53 systems and equip the latter with optimized coverage as well as multimission and counterfire target acquisition capabilities.
Lockheed has also secured two separate contracts to update the radars with air surveillance, extended range and counter unmanned aerial/aircraft system functions via various technology insertions. In addition, the Q-53 radar is designed to trace, categorize, locate and identify indirect fire attacks in 90- and 360-degree modes.
“The flexibility of the architecture continues to allow the Q-53 to provide capabilities far beyond the original mission and allows for additional upgrades in the future,†said Rick Herodes, director of Q-53 program at Lockheed.
