Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory presented a kit to help students learn skills in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics during a STEM demonstration event on July 19.
Developed by a team under the laboratory’s air and missile defense sector, Operation D.O.M.E. is an escape room-themed kit that works to challenge users in unlocking clues and completing puzzles to accomplish a mission, APL said Thursday.
“One of the unique things about our group is that we all come from various disciplines, and I think we tried to incorporate that into the box,†said Emily Mintman, a design strategist at APL. “It included a broad range of challenges that touched different areas of expertise and disciplines across STEM.â€
Representatives from United Way noted the kit provides various lessons in social studies, reading comprehension and history to students. Dante deTablan, vice president at United Way Ben Center, said the kits may be fielded at Ben Franklin High School.
