Todd Gustafson, president of HP’s federal business, wrote in an article published Tuesday on FedTech that there are three steps government agencies should do to protect endpoint devices from cyber threats and the first is to acknowledge cybersecurity gaps.

“A core differentiator for security lies in the willingness of agencies to take meaningful strides to accommodate, locate and protect devices connected to their workforce,” Gustafson wrote. “A first step toward solving this problem would be to conduct a comprehensive audit to determine what devices are accessing the network, where they are located and how secure they might be.”

The succeeding steps agencies should consider are putting security ahead of all other procurement considerations and investing in a range of protective measures for endpoint devices, including attack detection and remediation, configuration maintenance and automated threat monitoring.

Agencies should also consider using devices with integrated features such as tools that work to detect malware and built-in privacy modes, Gustafson added.
