The Department of Energy plans to award $31.5M in total research grants under the first phase of its Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer programs for fiscal 2020. Interested companies can propose technical feasibility studies to facilitate innovation across program offices under the DOE Office of Science, the department said Monday.

Congress established the SBIR and STTR programs to encourage the small business community to participate in government technology advancement initiatives. DOE will provide $200K to selected phase 1 projects for a period of six months to one year.

Participants that complete their work have the opportunity to bid for phase 2 funds to conduct prototyping or research and development efforts in fiscal 2021. The maximum duration for phase 2 grants is two years while funding support, which depends on the topic, can reach $1.1M or $1.6M.
