Synthetik Applied Technologies, an artificial intelligence technology developer, has partnered with the Department of Homeland Security’s Science and Technology directorate to develop a synthetic data generation tool for training AI systems in baggage screening activities.

Synthetik said Tuesday it will commence a six-month effort to create a physics-based data generation platform that will provide training examples to support the development of automated screening technologies for the Transportation Security Administration. The company plans to leverage deep learning and implement a machine learning-based approach to develop the training capability as part of the contract.

According to Synthetik CEO Peter Vonk, the award builds on the company’s current efforts to develop 2D and 3D baggage screening as well as vehicle scanning capabilities for DHS.

Synthetik is an Austin, Texas-based startup that offers development services for AI, insurance and modeling and simulation technologies.
