Artificial intelligence technology developer Deep Labs partnered with information technology services firm Visual Connections to develop an AI-driven system that will help the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services detect fraud in Medicare-related transactions.

The tool uses data from the Medicare Part D program’s 39M beneficiaries and identifies cases of fraudulent activity before they take place, Deep Labs said Monday. Visual Connections serves as the prime contractor for the pilot project, which utilizes techniques such as deep learning and visioning.

According to Deep Labs CEO Scott Edington, the effort demonstrates the capacity of AI to improve government operations and will help CMS mitigate potential losses. Deep Labs offers persona-based intelligence products for banking, identity verification, healthcare and government operations.

The firm has offices in the U.S., U.K. and Singapore. Visual Connections is based in Atmore, Ala. and provides IT support as well as health, data and surveillance services.
