Battelle is set to study commercial off-the-shelf fluorine-free fire suppression foams to validate if they have met military specifications.
Funded by the Department of Defense's Environmental Security Technology Certification Program, the project seeks to confirm the capacity of firefighting technologies in achieving stringent burnback and extinguishment requirements, the company said Monday.
Battelle plans to collaborate with foam manufacturers to demonstrate their products’ effectiveness against hydrocarbon fires in line with the MIL-PRF-24385F standard. In addition, the firm will confirm, categorize, capture and destroy polyfluoroalkyl substances to revitalize chemical-filled areas.
The company expects to implement eligible fire suppression foams at DoD and achieve a technology readiness level of eight out of nine after the project. It also noted the project will potentially help aviation and civil partners mitigate environmental concerns.
DoD launched the ESTCP initiative to identify, test and promote technologies that may help address the agency’s environmental needs.
