AECOM has finished a decontamination and demolition effort to help Department of Energy eradicate chances of hazardous releases from old Cold War facilities. The company said Monday it concluded D&D work at nuclear facilities within Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory near Niskayuna, N.Y.
John Vollmer, president of AECOM’s management services group and 2019 Wash100 Award recipient, said the KAPL cleanup’s conclusion reduces environmental risks and helps the DOE in “accelerating the momentum of its Environment Management mission.â€
Two KAPL buildings formerly supported the now defunct Separations Process Research Unit, an old research effort that aimed to extract plutonium and uranium from irradiated materials for use in nuclear technologies. The SPRU effort at KAPL covered 50K square feet of buildings and 27 acres of waste management land.
