United Launch Alliance has partnered with two aerospace technology suppliers for a STEM education program that seeks to expose students and interns to space launch operations.
Airborne Systems and RUAG will provide equipment that will support the launch of the Future Heavy Super Sport rocket built by ULA’s interns and their mentors as part of the 2019 Student Rocket Launch event, the Lockheed Martin–Boeing joint venture said Thursday.
ULA and Ball Aerospace serve as event sponsors.
The 35-foot high-power sport rocket will carry around 30 payloads produced by K-12 students across the country as well as interns from Ball Aerospace.
RUAG’s space business will provide a carbon composite-based rocket payload fairing which will help release the payloads, while Airborne Systems will deploy a parachute system designed to stabilize the rocket upon its descent.
“It’s an honor to work with RUAG Space and Airborne Systems, companies who support critical space missions, to help us inspire the next generation of aerospace industry leaders,†said ULA’s president and CEO Tory Bruno.
Future Heavy Super Sport will be launched at the Fort Carson Army Post in Colorado on July 20.
