An Amazon Web Services blog post published Wednesday examines how the Washington-based Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has facilitated the development of an image similarity platform for national security missions through cloud adoption.

“Machine learning, deep learning, our ability to spin up various resources for this project on AWS, all of this helps decrease our time to market, and it helps us, as software engineers, to engage at an early point,” said Ralph Perko, lead senior software engineer at PNNL.

He also cited the national lab’s adoption of AWS Lambda and how the service offering helped the organization extract features from images and index them. Perko also mentioned PNNL’s reason for moving to the cloud as well as the benefits of the lab’s cloud migration effort.

“Time to market. Costs reduction for services and ownership. The ripple effect of how much effort and how much of people’s time has to go into hardware maintenance … the cloud has changed all of this,” he added.
