Huntington Ingalls Industries received a two-year, $40 million contract modification to perform additional refueling and complex overhaul work for the U.S. Navy’s nuclear-powered USS George Washington aircraft carrier.
As part of the modification, Huntington Ingalls’ Newport News shipbuilding arm will overhaul, modernize, repair, maintain and refuel the Nimitz-class vessel before it is delivered to the Navy, the Department of Defense said Monday.
The Naval Sea Systems Command will obligate the full amount in fiscal 2018 shipbuilding and construction funds at the time of award.
DoD noted that HII, the original contractor for the CVN 68 class, is the only private shipyard with the capacity to refuel and overhaul nuclear-powered carriers “without an unacceptable disruption of Navy-wide overhaul and repair schedule.â€
The Pentagon expects contract work to take place in Newport News, Va., through August 2021.
