BWXT’s Tom McCabe on Addressing Cyber Threats, Advancing Transparency

Tom McCabe, senior vice president and general counsel at BWX Technologies, told Vision Magazine in an interview about the company’s efforts to address potential cybersecurity threats posed by adversaries.

“We’re currently seeing the greatest transfer of wealth in the history of the human race in terms of technology that’s being stolen by foreign adversaries,” said McCabe, who is also chief compliance officer and corporate secretary.

“That’s allowed them to close the military gap with the U.S. at very little cost and in a very short amount of time. It’s critical that we address that, and it’s equally important that the two departments – legal and IT – have the same mutual trust,” he added.

He also discussed how his team advances transparency and protects the intellectual property as the company develops new technologies and pursues new contracts.

“I see my job as empowering our team to let them do their best work, to make their workflow as seamless as possible,” McCabe noted. “The last thing you want to do is hand down advice from an ivory tower. You have to be involved and engaged.”
