Booz Allen’s Courtney Crosby: DoD Must Address Need for AI Training, Experts

Courtney Crosby, a senior lead scientist at Booz Allen Hamilton, has said that the military’s lack of internal artificial intelligence experts warrants collaborations with industry until its human capital is “fully developed.”

In a C4ISRnet piece published Wednesday, Crosby wrote that while such partnerships will bring together experts such as scientists and cognitive engineers, AI professionals with mission-specific experience will help translate complex AI methodology for warfighters with non-technical knowledge in the emerging technology.

She added that the Department of Defense must implement AI into military teaming operations and deploy a cognitive engineering approach to AI training activities to cultivate the workforce “deemed necessary for future success.”

“AI training can target all three features of future warfare by empowering the services with broad understanding, technical instruction, and teaming exercises,” Crosby said. “In an era were operational offsets are limited and where technology superiority is constantly challenged, the services cannot afford to neglect AI adoption.”
