Satellite services startup RBC Signals has received a contract from the U.S. Air Force to use the company's ground satellite terminals worldwide to investigate multimission intelligent edge computing infrastructure, SpaceNews reported Monday.

The company will perform contract work under the first phase of the Air Force’s Small Business Innovative Research program.

The report noted that interest has been emerging amongst satellite operators to utilize ground stations, and even the satellites themselves, to process big data from constellations prior to its transmission to data centers.

Ron Faith, president and chief operating officer of RBC Signals, said such terminals help operators accelerate the process to assess images and pick clear data for analysis.

Faith added the contract win comes as the company increases efforts to pursue government business opportunities.

RBC Signals was established in 2015 and now operates over 65 antennas in more than 40 locations globally to support customer satellite communications.
