A Lockheed Martin subsidiary has secured a two-year, $56.8M contract modification to manufacture guidance and control systems used by the U.S. Navy’s heavyweight torpedoes.

Sippican will also deliver replacement kits, support accessories, spare parts, hardware repair and engineering services for the service branch’s MK 48 Mod 7 Common Broadband Advanced Sonar Systems, the Department of Defense said Monday.

Contract work will take place in Massachusetts and Pennsylvania and is scheduled to conclude by March 2021.

The modification represents a third option under a previously awarded $425M firm-fixed-price, cost-plus-fixed-fee contract for the production of the sonar platforms.

Naval Sea Systems Command will obligate the full value of the modification from fiscal years 2017 to 2019 funds at the time of award.

The MK 48 Mod 7 Common Broadband Advanced Sonar System is designed to equip MK 48 torpedoes with optimized bandwidth and simplified targeting capabilities to carry out countermeasures against submarines and surface vessels.
