Kratos Defense’s unmanned systems group has secured a $31.8M contract modification to build and deliver 35 unmanned target drones to the U.S. Air Force.

The modification represents an exercised option under a previously awarded $109M contract for the production of lots 14 to 16 of the Air Force Subscale Aerial Target BQM-167A drone, the company said Wednesday.

Performance of work is scheduled to conclude by May 31, 2021 and will take place in Sacramento, Calif.

The Air Force and its military allies utilize the BQM-167A drone to simulate and assess performance traits of enemy aircraft units and potential missile threats to validate weapons development, testing and training requirements.

“We look forward to continuing to evolve the BQM-167A for the ever evolving threats and supporting the USAF well into the future,” said Steve Fendley, president at Kratos’ unmanned systems group.
