Cray and the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory have signed a $50M agreement to produce an exabyte file storage for a supercomputing machine as part of a $600M project unveiled in May.
The company said Monday it will connect the ClusterStor technology to the Frontier computer being developed for ORNL through the Slingshot interconnect to support artificial intelligence, modeling, analytics and simulation tasks.
The storage array will consist of over 40 cabinets and be designed to process more than 1 exabytes of data across two tiers. The platform will also support the Lustre parallel file system built for cluster computing functions, Cray added.
DOE expects the company to deliver the lab's new supercomputer in 2021.
Hewlett Packard Enterprise entered into a $1.3B cash deal to acquire Cray in a push to expand HPE's high-performance computing technology portfolio.
