BG Matt Easley: U.S. Army AI Task Force Looking to “Cast Fog of War” on Adversaries

During a recent GEOINT Symposium on June 4th, BG Matthew Easley, director of the U.S. Army Artificial Intelligence Task Force within the Army Futures Command, said that the service is looking to geospatial intelligence and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies that can “cast the fog of war” on adversaries.

“War is the realm of uncertainty; three quarters of the factors on which action in war is based are wrapped in a fog of greater or lesser uncertainty. A sensitive and discriminating judgment is called for; a skilled intelligence to scent out the truth,” Easley argued during the event.

He continued his argument that geospatial intelligence is critical to develop artificial intelligence that can find, track, fix and eventually destroy potential threats. According to BG Easley, AI is essential to ““filter the massive amounts of data” required for modern weapons systems and to navigate the battlefield environment.”

BG Easley was also adamant about standardizing the format and distribution of geospatial intelligence to improve efficiency for the U.S. military. He argued that intel needs to provide the computational tools to improve critical thinking for battlefield leaders, who need as much data as possible. He added that the Army is looking to the private sector for better solutions and for help revamping its technology solutions, doctrine, and training.

“We cannot succeed without your support, that’s impossible,” Easley said. “We want to build, fail, and build again … at the speed of relevance.”
