The California Polytechnic State University is working with Amazon Web Services on a new initiative aiming to enhance satellite connectivity and access to data from low-Earth orbit to utilize the information for wildfire mitigation, agriculture yield assessment and other purposes.
Cal Poly’s Satellite Data Solutions initiative will mainly provide students and faculty with access to AWS services, technologies and technical expertise to utilize satellite data, AWS said Monday.
The SDS initiative will support projects to address challenges currently facing both academic institutions and the public sector, such as the integration of capabilities of satellite developers and operators, real-time data analysis, land-use planning, resource evaluation and environmental analysis.
Cal Poly’s Digital Transformation Hub will lead the SDS initiative and work with the AWS Ground Station.
DxHub plans to release datasets around the world to help the CubeSat/LEO community explore real-time analytics.
The data will be publicly available through the AWS Public Dataset program and the Registry of Open Data on AWS.
