Amazon Web Services is providing cloud services for new software designed to help researchers simulate earthquakes to prepare cities and first responders before an event occurs.

AWS said Tuesday the San Diego Supercomputer Center at UC San Diego and Intel developed the Extreme-Scale Discontinuous Galerkin Environment for seismic modeling as part of a joint project that sought to create multievent  simulations in a single software execution andÂ

EDGE is designed to generate one quadrillion calculations per second and run on the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud, which works by customizing high-performance compute clusters.

AWS noted seismic modeling could help researchers understand an earthquake’s effects, aid cities in impact mitigation planning and support awareness and rapid response initiatives.

US San Diego researchers will deliver a presentation on cloud-based seismic simulation during the ISC High Performance conference in Frankfurt, Germany.
