Boeing is planning to implement technology updates on the E/A-18G Growler to help the U.S. Navy meet modernization goals for the service's electronic warfare aircraft fleet by the mid-2020s, Defense News reported Tuesday.
“Growler is the only platform of its type that is being produced today and so it makes sense that we would take something that was designed in the 90s and now enhance it to really be relevant for decades to come,†Jen Tebo, director of Super Hornet and Growler development at Boeing, said at the Sea-Air-Space event in Maryland.
The company seeks to modify the aircraft’s Northrop Grumman-made ALQ-218 sensor system and add distributed processing technology to help accelerate threat data processing and reduce operator workload.
Boeing will equip the Growler Block 2 iteration with a low-drag fuel and also examine whether to initiate a service life extension.
