Raytheon has showcased two directed energy platforms that were able to destroy drone targets as part of an experimental demonstration for the U.S. Air Force.

The company said Tuesday its high-energy laser system was installed onto a Polaris MRZR vehicle and engaged unmanned aerial systems, while its high power microwave technology countered drone swarms through advanced detection features.

HPM demonstrated a consistent supply of microwave energy and HEL operated along with the company’s multispectral targeting system to detect, identify and engage UAS targets.

"After decades of research and investment, we believe these advanced directed energy applications will soon be ready for the battlefield to help protect people, assets and infrastructure," said Thomas Bussing, VP of the advanced missile systems division.

Stefan Baur, vice president of Raytheon's electronic warfare systems segment, said the two systems offer frontline operators with options to mitigate threats to crucial assets.
