The Professional Services Council Foundation has issued a report that assesses the federal government’s adoption of artificial intelligence and identifies the opportunities and challenges agencies face when it comes to AI implementation.
The report highlighted opportunities that AI offers to the government including reduction in backlog; optimization of resource allocation; accelerated decision making; fraud prevention; and extraction of insights from large amounts of data.
The document, underwritten by Accenture’s federal services business, cited AI-related use cases at the Department of Defense, General Services Administration, NASA and the Department of Health and Human Services as well as policy developments that could help speed up federal AI adoption.
These include the President’s Management Agenda, Modernizing Government Technology Act and an executive order that aims to maintain U.S. leadership in AI.
Four challenges to agencies’ AI adoption were also discussed in the report. Those are the need to establish the business case; grow AI competency; create an analytics culture; and ensure ethical use of AI.
Dominic Delmolino, managing director and chief technology officer at Accenture Federal Services, said various AI-related use cases for federal agencies are starting to transpire as government leaders express a strong sense for the technology’s potential.
“With something as new as AI, open dialogue and a collaborative approach can be invaluable for envisioning how to apply the technology within an organization. What we have learned is that AI has broad applicability throughout government with real solutions ready to make a real impact today,†Delmolino added.
