Thomas Benjamin, a senior research scientist at Perspecta Labs received the Test of Time Award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers for his team’s investigation of medical device security approaches.

Benjamin and his fellow researchers gained recognition at the IEEE's 40th Symposium on Security and Privacy after publishing “Pacemakers and Implantable Cardiac Defibrillators: Software Radio Attacks and Zero-Power Defenses” report, which explored the security weaknesses of medical devices and presented ideas for zero-power defenses, Perspecta said Wednesday.

Their research paper explained how they tested software radio-based attacks on current pacemaker technology. Benjamin and his team found existing vulnerabilities that can affect the privacy and security of patients and proposed zero-power methods to reduce risk.

"Thomas' work on this paper is a true representation of who we are and what we do at Perspecta," said Petros Mouchtaris, president of Perspecta Labs.

In his current capacity, Benjamin conducts research into wireless networking and cybersecurity.
