Raytheon has installed and prepared a new ground-based detect and avoid system for drone testing operations at Springfield-Beckley Municipal Airport.
The airport will use the Raytheon-built Ground Based Detect and Avoid platform to evaluate the safety of small unmanned aerial vehicles during the test period that will take place within a 200-square-mile range, the company said Tuesday.
“GBDAA allows drone pilots to make safe decisions about flight maneuvers beyond visual line of sight without using ground observers or chase planes,” said Matt Gilligan, vice president of the intelligence, information and services business at Raytheon.
The U.S. Air Force-commissioned system is part of the SkyVision platform designed to help drone operators visualize sensor-based aircraft and tracking data.
Raytheon based GBDAA on the firm’s Standard Terminal Automation Replacement System installed at more than 400 FAA and military air traffic control facilities.
