The U.S. Army has selected Modern Technology Solutions Inc. to examine the potential uses of artificial intelligence in military aviation.

MTSI said Thursday it will help Army Combat Capabilities Development Command determine and classify current and emerging AI platforms for use in automatic target acquisition and intelligent control tasks.

Ben Etheredge, a machine learning subject matter expert at MTSI, said the company and the service will work to study how different AI subcategories can be applied to multidomain operations.

"We will be defining artificial intelligence to include machine learning, natural language processing, expert systems, vision systems, hearing systems, etc. and each of these sub levels can be further decomposed," said Willie Maddox, manager of MTSI's Huntsville-based AI laboratory.
