San Diego-based robotics technology developer ModalAI has received a contract of an undisclosed value from the U.S. Army to design small unmanned aircraft systems for military use.
ModalAI said Tuesday it aims to build a lightweight, artificial intelligence-based aerial computing platform that would autonomously plan mission paths, execute tasks and avoid obstacles through LTE technology.
The company plans to derive the hardware from the VOXL platform used to support autonomous navigation programs for aerial, indoor, outdoor and ground-based robots.
According to ModalAI, it is working on a drone flight controller that employs a built-in motor control unit and Qualcomm's Snapdragon 820 technology.
