Lockheed Martin has secured a $10.5M contract to produce a modular pod technology for the U.S. Army's Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System.
The GMLRS launcher will be built to replace M26 platforms and function with GMLRS unitary and alternative warhead configurations as well as future extended-range rockets, Lockheed said Wednesday.
Gaylia Campbell, vice president of precision fires and combat maneuver systems at Lockheed, said the new pod for reloading rocket tubes will help ensure that warfighters have an adequate amount of available rounds.
Campbell added the company will develop the pod to be interoperable with MLRS M270 launchers and the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System.
Lockheed will manufacture the launchers at its Camden, Ark., facility for flight tests later this year and commence initial deliveries in 2021.
The MLRS Family of Munitions covers a range of precision-strike missiles and rockets designed to support the Army’s tactical and operational functions.
