Frank Strickland, managing director at Deloitte Consulting, told Government Matters in a video interview posted Thursday that there are several challenges military decision-makers should consider as they look to use artificial intelligence to build up readiness and one is asking the right questions.

“We have to work what I call the iron triangle, we have to get the right question for an AI model, we have to get the right data for that model, and then we have to get the right modeling approach. That’s iterative and its hard. We don’t want clients to rush past the problem definition phase. It’s a difficult task and it’s essential,” Strickland said.

Other challenges he discussed are the statistical accuracy of the model and military-specific challenges.

Strickland said connecting AI tools together is now being done in the commercial sector and within the Department of Defense.

“One example in connecting AI technologies together is we’re really building an ensemble of models. … Second example is connecting the sense-making models so the models that are driving insights with autonomy, so that there is autonomous action the machines are interacting and in some cases making decisions and taking action without human intervention,” he told host Francis Rose.
