CAE has entered the production phase for its updated magnetic anomaly detection MAD-XR platform intended for helicopters, submarines, and other aircraft and naval vessels.

The company made the announcement during the CANSEC symposium and will now manufacture the MAD-Extended Role system following a two-year testing period with the U.S. Navy and Lockheed Martin, CAE said Wednesday.

Joe Armstrong, vice president of business operations at CAE, said the MAD-XR offering deploys advanced sensor technology which can help in missions such as search-and-rescue and submarine detection.

Magnetic anomaly detection is also used by helicopters and unmanned aerial vessels to reduce magnetic interference.

As part of the Cooperative Research and Development Agreement's testing effort, CAE deployed MAD-XR onto the Navy’s MH-60R Romeo aircraft developed by Lockheed’s Sikorsky subsidiary to help assess the magnetometer's sensor capabilities.

MAD-XR is designed to be lighter and more compact than prior MAD platforms, which CAE has been producing for over four decades and are more suitable for large aircraft and maritime patrol operations.
