The U.S. Air Force has announced its intent to acquire a small heavy-lift unmanned aerial system from Andover, Mass.-based research and development firm Physical Sciences, C4ISRNET reported Wednesday.

The service branch said in a May 23 FedBizOpps notice that it plans to order one InstantEye MK-3 GEN4-D1 Unmanned Aerial System from the company, which includes two drones, a sensor controller and related equipment.

According to the announcement, the Air Force selected Physical Sciences as a sole-source contractor because of the firm’s production of USAF-certfified quadcopter platforms.

InstantEye's Mk-3 family of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft are equipped with vision-based and GPS-denied navigation technologies as well as features like line-of-sight video range, thermal imaging and a three-pound payload capacity.
