Lockheed Martin and Raytheon have partnered to compete for a multi-agency program that seeks to modernize U.S. air traffic control and surveillance systems.
Both companies will bring more than a century of experience in military and civilian radar programs worldwide in joint pursuit of the Spectrum Efficient National Surveillance Radar contract, Raytheon said Monday.
The SENSR cross-agency team, which includes the Federal Aviation Administration collaborates with the departments of Defense and Homeland Security, aims to replace aging commercial radar systems with fewer multimission platforms and free up large amounts of bandwidth ahead of a potential 5G implementation.
“There’s an increasing demand for radio spectrum that’s driving the rapid expansion of wireless internet services across America,” said Ralph Acaba, president of Raytheon’s integrated defense systems segment.
Paul Lemmo, vice president and general manager of integrated warfare systems and sensors at Lockheed’s rotary and mission systems business, said developing a new radar infrastructure can help increase air safety and national security.
