Glock Inc, the Austrian weapons manufacturer's U.S. arm, has received a potential 10-year, $85M contract to provide standard-duty handguns to the Customs and Border Protection for use in law enforcement operations.

CBP said Tuesday Glock may also supply handguns to other law enforcement units under the Department of Homeland Security through the contract.

The agency plans to replace its current .40 pistols with a 9mm configuration by the end of fiscal year 2021.

Robert Perez, deputy commissioner of CBP, said the contract "represents our commitment to providing the highest quality use-of-force tools and equipment to our law enforcement personnel who defend America’s frontline every day."

The solicitation process for the contract involved collection of input from law enforcement personnel, field evaluations and performance tests by National Institute of Justice laboratories.
