Battelle completed a three-week training event for a mobile laboratory designed to help the Department of Defense and military branches perform on-site analysis of chemical, biological and radiological threats.

Personnel training for the latest Common Analytical Laboratory System, a modified version of current Analytical Laboratory Systems, took place at the Edgewood Chemical Biological Center in Aberdeen, Md., Battelle said Wednesday.

The nonprofit company helped integrate analytical equipment into a truck-mounted platforms for end users to gain hands-on operational experience as part of the event.

“It’s a fairly complex challenge to meet the individual mission needs of the end-users for each of the CALS variants," said Rodney Black, deputy program manager for the project at Battelle.

"But, we were able to bring our long and deep history of using technology to solve complex challenges involving chemical and biological threats," Black added.

Battelle will support a government-led field test to assess the operational suitability of the system with potential military users.

The nonprofit added it is close to completing work under the fourth year of a $34.8M Joint Product Manager CBRNE Analytics and Response Systems contract.
