Aerojet Rocketdyne broke ground Thursday on its engineering, manufacturing and development site in Camden, Ark., for solid rocket motors.

The company said Thursday it plans to open the 17K-square-foot EMD facility in next year's spring to develop engines in pursuit of the Ground Based Strategic Deterrent, missile defense target and hypersonic programs.

The project will expand Aerojet Rocketdyne's center of excellence in Camden and its partnership with the Calhoun County, Ouachita Partnership for Economic Development and Arkansas Economic Development Commission.

The rocket engine manufacturer has maintained a presence in the state 1979 and produces 75K motors each year.

Aerojet Rocketdyne aims to grow the number of its employees to 900 through 2021.
