Naveen Rao and David Hoffman of Intel have said the Trump administration should build on an executive order signed in February to develop a national strategy that would advance the development and deployment of artificial intelligence.

Rao and Hoffman wrote in an article published Wednesday that Intel’s recommended national AI strategy focuses on four aspects and one is to promote research and development in AI.

Under this key pillar, the U.S. government should make funding commitments to AI-related R&D work, develop government policies for the technology and support data interoperability standards and international cooperation to advance intellectual property protections and facilitate data sharing.

The company’s proposed strategy calls for the government to come up with employment opportunities and protect people’s welfare through skills retraining and continuous education programs.

Hoffman and Rao noted the need for the strategy also supports the removal of barriers and creation of a legal and policy environment for AI as well as advance responsible data sharing.

Rao is corporate vice president and general manager of Intel’s AI products group and Hoffman is the company’s associate general counsel and global privacy officer.
