Louisville Innovation Dept Creates AWS-Based Traffic Info Reporting Tool

The innovation department of Louisville, Ky., used Amazon Web Services cloud technology to create an open source system designed to provide traffic congestion data for government use.

The city launched its Waze Analytics Relational-database Platform in November 2017 as part of the Waze Connected Citizens Program aimed at improving traffic situation reporting through advanced analytics, AWS said Wednesday.

Features include application programming interface hooks, querying, analysis and mapping tools.

AWS noted the system works to help agencies promote pedestrian and bike safety, provide information on road conditions and manage emergency response operations.

“The AWS Cloud speeds our development process along and reduces the overall cost of deploying the system versus doing it strictly internally, and allows us to share our work with other cities,” said Michael Schnuerle, Louisville’s chief data officer.

WARP offers more than 900 government entities access to a free traffic data reporting platform.

Louisville also established an Open Government Coalition to support collaborative open source projects such as the SpeedUp USA resident notification and Street QUality IDentification systems.
