Inmarsat has partnered with Orbit Communication Systems, a satellite communications terminal provider, to develop a compact and lightweight aviation terminal that will support unmanned aerial vehicles, military aircraft and business jets.

Under the long-term agreement, the two companies will produce a multi-role Global Xpress 46 terminal intended to coordinate with the Wideband Global Satcom system and host Inmarsat’s satcom as a service capabilities through the latter’s wideband GX network, Inmarsat said Wednesday.

The firms will manufacture GX46 with fully integrated software, electronic and modem components.

Steve Gizinski, chief technology officer of Inmarsat's government segment, said the GX46 terminal will support mil band operations and expand the company’s airborne connectivity portfolio.

“The implementation of the GX46 benefits from Orbit’s years of experience developing airborne satcom systems,” he noted.

Inmarsat’s GX constellation is currently the only high-throughput wideband network in the world.
